Carpal Tunnel syndrome Surgery
63What exactly is carpal tunnel syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand that houses the median nerve and tendons. for example,if you touch your thumb with the little finger,it will be the groove from your wrist to the palm of your hand. That is where the carpal tunnel is.Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed. The result may be pain, sometimes excruciating, weakness sometimes complete loss of muscle capability in grabbing or lifting objects, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm, feels like an electric shock.
Carpal Tunnel syndrome
Having had Carpal Tunnel,I can recall the pain I went through for years, before going to the doctor and getting operated on.
My carpal tunnel started after working in a tire factory for years.I built tires and to take the tire off the drum you had to pull on the bead with both hands, which over time took it's toll on my hands.
I wore a hand brace on both hands which didn't help.Took medicine which helped for a while.
Working with tools, such as hammers, pliers, screwdrivers or grabbing a hold of an object with closed fist hurt especially if you hit the Carpal muscle.
Waking up in the morning with your hands a sleep.I had to shake my arms to get the blood flowing into the hands before i could do anything.
After driving an auto for a short while my hands would start hurting with a shooting pain, and go to sleep also.I even pulled over to the roadside and rested my hands when the pain got real bad.
Then one day I decided to go and see a specialist on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
They ran tests on my arms with electrical shockers and advised me to get operated on as that was the only remedy to correct the problem. This process is called an Electrical Nerve Conduction Test.
If you get operated on,make sure they do only one hand at a time, because it takes 3 to 4 months for the operation to heal, plus going to the bathroom or taking a shower, you will need a hand to work with.
If you are working for someone or yourself, you need to make sure that you have the needed time to heal off the job and the finances to get you through the ordeal,as it takes up to six months for the hands to heal.

Firead45-I also suffered from Carpal Tunnel and wore braces on both wrists at night, preparing for the surgery. This may sound bizarre, but using those braces seemed to do the trick. I never had the surgery and the pain has gone away.
Perhaps I stopped some irritating movement unknowingly...my surgeon is baffled.
Anyhow-on to a total hip replacement in June instead! :(
Thanks for the concise hub,

Been there. Mine started years ago. It comes and goes. Surgery would be the last thing I would want to do. Nice hub.
Got it! The neurologist said it's the worst case he's ever seen. Lucky me!
I know people who have had this condition and it can be very debilitating? Dont people sometimes drop things as well? Anyway thank you for a helpful hub:)
Hello flread45,
I experienced carpal tunnel when I was pregnant with my first son... both hands used to cramp up and lock in place while I was sleeping and the pain was ridiculous. Got a cortesone shot into the tunnel and a miracle... the pain was gone.
That was 30 years ago and I am now beginning to get the same symptoms again, but without insurance (just lost my job 3 months ago) I won't be getting shots any time soon. Not as bad as 30 years ago and I'm pretty tough, so all is good.
take care... kkalmes
