How To Avoid A Skunk Problem with chickens
67How to avoid a skunk problem
How to avoid a skunk problem.
Now that you or your pet has been sprayed by the little white and black skunk, you are wondering how to get rid of the stink!!
Well first of all, your pet and you should have known the warning signs before you got sprayed.
These warning signs are;
The skunk will stomp it's feet and charge at the intruder,or arch it's back and walk away.
If you don't take the hint,it will turn it's butt towards you, raise it's tail and release a stinky musk that is yellow in color from two glands near it's anus.
This spray doesn't only stink but burns if sprayed into the eyes.
Here is a recipe that works on skunk odor;
- 1 qt.of 3%hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 teaspoon liquid soap.
- Mix these 3 together and bath thoroughly
You have to use this mixture immediately as it breaks down through chemical reaction.
Rinse with tap water afterwards and repeat if needed.
If you are sprayed in the eyes, flush with tap water thoroughly

Skunk troubles
I am having some trouble with a family of Skunks, as they are enjoying my cat's chow.
In the garbage barrel where I keep the cat food was an odor bearing skunk.
Lucky for me I didn't reach in and scoop some food up.
Skunks have a special gland that is full of a yellow, stinky, substance that they spray on their enemies.
This spray can cause serious medical injuries to a person or pet and can cause temporary blindness also.
Well anyway the skunk ruined that bag of food and the barrel too.
Then I fed the Dog in his pen last night and when I walked
outside this morning all I could smell was skunk.
My pooch came up to greet me and I vacated the premises
real fast.
Had to give him a bath and then used perfume to combat the
odor.
I have tried tomato juice and never worked for me,so I
use perfume.
The only way I have found to irradicate the skunks is by use
of a
have-a-hart trap. After placing a weiner in the trap, I checked it every hour until finally I had a skunk trapped.
Then I covered the trap with a blanket to
keep skunk from
spraying you.Haul the creature off to the woods and let them
go.
You can also shoot them but they will spray all over the place
and then you have to dispose of a stinky animal, which is not
pleasant.
So the best way to keep skunks away is don't leave dog and
cat food where they can get
to it.
Below I have compiled some characteristics of the skunk.
Physical Description
Striped skunks are easily recognized by their colors and pattern. The fur is black with a white stripe that
begins as at the top of the head and forks down both sides, and usually merges
again near the base of the tail. Another white stripe runs
from the base of the snout between the eyes and ends on
the forehead. The stripe width and length vary with each
individual animal. Stripes are sometimes on the tail, but more often
the tail is intemixed with black and white hair or fur.
The Mephitis mephitis is about the size of a domestic cat, with a
small head, small ears, short legs, and a long, fluffy tail.
Feet are plantigrade with five partially webbed toes.
Claws are longer on the front feet to aid in digging.
The skull is distinct from other carnivores in having only one
molar on each side of the upper jaw and two on each side of
the lower jaw. The upper molars have a characteristic square
shape.

Reproduction
Reproduction
Females are monestrous, but they occasionally can have a
second estrous if the first pregnancy is unsuccessful. Mating
takes place from mid-February until mid-March. The gestation
period is between 60 and 77 days, with delayed implantation
probably involved. Usually, five or six young are born in each
litter. At birth, baby striped skunks are blind, deaf, and extremely
immature. They nurse for about a month and a half in the
mother's den. Fully weaned, the young then follow the mother
about, finally breaking from the family about a year after
reaching adult size.

Behavior
Behavior
Striped skunks are nocturnal, sleeping during the day in
underground burrows and emerging around dusk to search for
food. They prefer to use burrows made by other animals of
equal size or natural burrows under tree stumps or buildings.
They use their long front claws to build their own den if
necessary.
Both males and females undergo periods of inactivity from
November until March. Females often remain in their winter
dens for the entire winter, but males usually emerge during
mild temperature periods to feed. Winter dens usually consist
of six females and their young. One male sometimes
occupies a den with females, but usually lives alone in its
own den.

Food Habits
Food Habits
A skunk is a true omnivore, eating a vast assortment
of things including insects, small crustation, mammals, birds and
eggs, fruits, grasses,
leaves, buds, grains, nuts, and carrion. Insects make up
approximately 70% of their diet. Striped skunks often attack the
nests of colonial insects, such as bees and ants. When
attacking a bee hive, they wait for the angry bees to emerge
from the hive, then bat them out of the air and eat them.
Striped skunks are opportunistic and diet changes depending
on the time of year and available resources.

Now one way I have found to tell a skunk to get is by using Pepper Spray on them.
They will high tail it in a hurry, and by the way if they give you the high tail, you better get back in a hurry also.

Sometimes the car runs over a skunk and you can smell it a long time. How do you get rid of the smell? It's overpowering!

Skunks can be a menace, and smell really gross as well, but if kept at a distance they are cute and resourceful. Maybe I just feel that way because of the dignified stripe running over their heads and down their backs.
I encountered a skunk around midnight in the neighborhood. We both caught each other off guard. I stopped and looked at him, he stopped and looked at me. There might've been a moment of tension and then we were both off on our regular routes again. Sure was a close call!
Thanks for the skunk info. I've been fortunate to keep my dog away from the so far. Interesting photo of the baby skunk-I wonder if they produce the exact same stench as the adults.
Thanks for the info about the baby skunks smelling just as bad as the adults. Best to keep away from both!
Thanks for this article. I am dealing with a skunk problem at this very moment! My problem skunk has killed my chickens. I have had my chickens for years, and this has been heartbreaking. :( I have help from a professional to trap this skunk. I plan on making a chicken-skunk hub as soon as I have more answers (and hopefully a solution!).
I just moved to the country and have a skunk family running around my property. At this point they are not coming to near the house so I am leaving them alone. Hopefully it stays that way since there is plenty of acreage for us all.
Good for me, I only see them in photos. =)
My 'ex' had a run in with a skunk so I understand exactly how aromatic they really are...If you want to get rid of skunk smell from clothing and skin (should work for animals too) buy Avon's shower gels...they really work!
(Course you could always just get rid of the 'ex' LOL)
