How you do avoid being scammed by crooks
62How to avoid being scammed
The best way to avoid being scammed is by calling the Better Business Bureau and checking the person or business who is trying to make a deal with you.
Never give personal information out to someone you do not know or trust.
Never give your social security number out over the phone without knowing who you are dealing with.
Never give your bank card number to someone you do not know or trust
Never sell property on a rent to own basis without checking the person's background and
going through a Realestate company,or a Lawyer.
Do not think you can draw up the paper work for the rent to own contract,as it may come back to bite you later on.
Yes it will cost you money, but you will be thankful when the renter defaults or scams another person into coming in with them and falsifies the contract.
Now the third party contacts you and asks who really owns the property.
After they have paid for a share of the property through the scam.
Guess who they are going to sue to get their money back?
You will be sued, because you have the most to loose in this lawsuit.
I know from experience, and it will cost you more then the property is worth sometimes.
Ask the person for references and what company he represents.
Tell the person you are going to call the home company and see if he is legit.
Always ask for first and last name of person you are dealing with
If it is a building contractor, always ask for their contractors license number. Then run it through your state contractor's board to see if it is legitimate.
Lawyers need to be checked to.You can do this by checking their state license also.
Very easy to check on out, just type in state licensing board on your search and you can go to your state web site from there.
If you sell e-bay products and accept checks, wait for the check to clear the bank before shipping the goods.
But by all means do not send people Western Union checks without first checking their identities and who they are working for and if they are a legitimate business..
Most scammers will back off and hang up on you if you tell them you are going to have them checked out by the Better Business Bureau or the local police.
Scams are hitting mailboxes and in-boxes,plus real people are posing as neighbors, lovers, and even real estate experts. The economic crisis has scammers busier and more creative than ever.

You gave us great tips to look out for and avoid being scammed. Thank you.
Hi FL:
Your advice is so good to hear. It sounds like you've experienced this for yourself. I hope you'll continue to share your insights in the same way...without anger or malice...but in this very thoughtful, helpful way. Thank you so much.
Appreciate the great advice being that I am, sad to admit, gullible. Just yesterday, I was almost scammed on Facebook by a 29-year old woman...I suppose she was a female by her photo...she wasn't a Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) or Hendry Gonforff (Paul Newman), for she started her con soft and sultry wanting a man like me to lead her in life, etc. Then, after my suspicions grew, she asked me to wire her $450.00 to Nigeria where she was being held by a motel for not paying her room. See ya! Funny thing here. Turns out, another gal, using the same M.O. started up with me yesterday...again, See ya. Thanks so much for looking out for me.

Unfortunately, some people just fall prey to scams very easily. But, they should definitely read your hub with great information on how not to be scammed! Calling the Better Business Bureau is certainly a great step, as you mention first.
Definitely an important topic, thanks for writing about it!
